Paisley Splendour by Raymond Honeyman Raymond Honeyman will be familiar to many of you. He has contributed a growing collection of designs to the Ehrman catalog over the past 10 years. Most of us would agree with the American magazine 'Stitchers World' when they wrote that "these dramatic canvases are some of the most exquisitely beautiful in needlepoint today." Raymond's background was originally in textile design, and it was his love of pattern, repeat and rich color which drew him towards tapestry. He takes up the story in his own words. "When Hugh Ehrman asked me if I would like to design a new 'paisley' tapestry which would be produced in a limited edition for the new collection I was delighted. The tapestry for this commission was to be suitable for a hanging or a rug for I had to carefully consider the composition to work for both. I have designed many paisleys for printed textiles over the years which were bought by various companies in Europe, USA and UK including Liberty and Viyella. I love designing highly decorative flowing patterns. " "I wanted the design to look opulent so decided to begin by designing several different paisleys which I could then combine so that each pattern merged into another. The inspiration for the colors came from bunches of summer flowers picked from my garden. I love the whole process of designing by drawing and painting, and seeing the designs develop and transform from my drawn pencil work through to full painted color. 'Paisley Splendour' was designed to be lavish, richly patterned and colorful and I am delighted with the extravagance of the finished tapestry." |
"The inspiration for this hanging was a French wallpaper, printed in 1826, showing a canal side street in Lyon. I love the formal rows of windows combined with the soft, old colouring of the wallpaper." Kaffe Fassett There are only a handful of textile artists alive today who are recognized around the world and Kaffe Fassett is one of them. Originally known for his knitting it is his needlework that now attracts greater attention. People are becoming aware of a remarkable collection of hangings which Kaffe has produced in recent years as commissions for private collectors. French Cityscape is on the scale of these recent pieces. It reminds us what a skillful craftsman he is. On these larger canvases Kaffe is able to explore more ambitious subjects and to use as many colours as he likes. These hangings are Kaffe's lasting legacy to the deorative arts and they confirm his reputation as one of the most distinctive designers of his time. Also Available as a Stitched Tapestry.

Golden Roses by Kaffe Fassett To reintroduce Kaffe Fassett seems unnecessary. He is the most celebrated needlework designer living today and the only one with a truly international following. When 107,000 people paid to see an exhibition of his work in Stockholm the scale of this international following became apparent. No one has produced such a range of designs in this field since William Morris and no other textile designer has sold over 3 million books worldwide. He is a phenomenon of our times and one of the most original colorist working in any field of the arts. His distinctive style will most certainly be remembered by future generations and examples of his work have already been acquired by museums around the world. 'Golden Roses' is inspired by ecclesiastical robes. Kaffe Fassett draws on the traditions of church embroidery but then creates something entirely his own. Only Kaffe would have thought of dotting the gold thread of the background with his trademark circles and it is this which adds an extra layer of textural richness to the hanging. This is the work of an artist at the height of this powers, confident in the use of his material and unafraid to experiment with technique. |
Ocean by Mollie Favour In the last catalog we featured Mollie Favour's 'Kelp Seascape', a limited edition of 10 kits. All of these have now been sold and for this year's catalog she has designed 'Ocean', a companion piece but in a different color range. Worked in random long stitch to emphasize the fluid, soft nature of her subject matter, ' Ocean' captures the vibrant colors and shifting patterns of the underwater world. This design, like the 'Kelp Seascape', is a collector's piece and we are producing it in a limited edition of just 10 kits. Mollie Favour is an American artist, originally from Oregon who now lives and works in Los Angeles. All of her work explores nature in one way or another from the landscape painting she does in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado to the vast abstract canvases she paints in Venice Beach where she lives. She also paints more intricate studies of flora - seed pods in particular - often distorted and semi-abstracted to capture the essence of her subject. Although primarily a painter, she is also well known for her ceramics and in 2001 designed a 100 sq. ft. ceramic mural at Playa del Rey, California. Examples of her work can be found in public, private and corporate collections around the world. |
